Calibration

When the model says 30%, does it happen 30% of the time?

Accuracy on its own is a poor test — always backing the favourite scores well and tells you nothing about what a 30% call is worth. The question that matters is whether the numbers mean what they say. Every point below is a band of claimed probability plotted against how often those calls actually landed, out of sample. On the diagonal is right.

Marker size is how many picks sit in that band. The straight line is perfect calibration; above it the model is too cautious, below it too confident.

Evaluated out of sample: each prediction was made by a model fitted only on matches before it, so nothing here saw its own answer. The sealed record of live picks is the forward-looking counterpart to this.

Calibration

What this page is for

A single question: when the model says something has a 30% chance, does it happen about three times in ten? Predictions are grouped into bands and each band is compared with its own observed hit rate.

How to read the bands

Close to the line is well calibrated. Consistently above it means the model is underconfident, consistently below it means overconfident — and overconfidence is the expensive direction, because it makes weak selections look strong on the radar.

The distinction that matters

Calibration is not accuracy. A model that says 50% about every match is perfectly calibrated and completely useless; a model that is often right can still be badly calibrated and unusable for pricing. You want both, and they are measured on different pages: sharpness on Model, honesty here.

Things to watch

Thin bands wobble. A band holding twenty predictions can miss its line by a long way through luck alone, so read the count beside each one before believing the gap.
